Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do
Hello, I’m Gemma Ryan and I am the Gem in Office Gem! I’m mostly a Virtual Assistant (VA) but I also do content creation and social media management with a bit of copywriting thrown into the mix. I’ll be honest (possibly a fault of mine as it’s not always a good thing), it wasn’t my first choice in work but after travelling for a few years and finding insurmountable obstacles in the way of my goals, I found a new path and have been proceeding merrily along it for the past 18 months.
Tell us about your business
My business is Office Gem. I started off in 2017 focusing solely on business admin, helping small businesses complete the tasks they either didn’t want to do or didn’t have time for, but very quickly added social media management. I can create content for you, schedule it and even manage your pages if you haven’t got time. About six months ago I decided to add copywriting to my offering in order to expand the business and it’s been fantastic. I love what I do more and more each day.
What are the most sparkly bits of what you do?
Creating content for other people or writing blogs means I have to do lots of research into topics I’m not necessarily familiar with and I really enjoy that. I love learning, so it’s always a fantastic opportunity to find out new things.
I also love knowing that I’ve helped someone, that I’ve been useful. Even if it’s only an hour a week, that’s an hour that they’ve got back and that they can put into their business or take time off to be with family or just relax!
What are the biggest challenges you face running your business?
I work part time so managing my time while making sure I still have enough money coming in to pay the bills is always fun!
What have been your biggest achievements and how have you celebrated them?
Mostly I have little achievements like a client saying how something I created for them, be it a simple tweet or a full blog, helped them get a sale or make a new connection. The little things matter and we should celebrate them more often rather than getting hung up on the big things.
What are your goals – for yourself and your business?
For my business I’d say just to keep going and increase my profit margins, but I think most people would say that! I would also really like to develop the copywriting side of the business as writing is something I’ve always loved doing and it allows me to let my creative side loose!
What is your favourite place in the North East and why?
The Stanhope Moors. When I was a child my dad and I would often take off for the afternoon in the car or on the motorbike and just drive around for hours and we’d always end up there. It’s such a wild, beautiful place and it’s where I go to when I need to clear my head.
Who puts a Sparkle in your eye?!
I couldn’t say that it’s just one person really. I have a big support network and each and every one of them are amazing human beings. I’d be lost without them and would definitely lose my Sparkle!
A final Sparkly thought – what tips would you give to busy, hard-working entrepreneurs?
Never be afraid to accept (or ask for) help. It’s not a weakness to admit that you can’t do it all yourself, it’s a strength.
