Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do
Hey Sparklers, I’m Gemma Forster, a Wordpress Web Designer from Chopwell (Gemma Forster Web Design). Oh heck, I feel like I’m listing on a dating site … I’m a bit daft, can be socially awkward (I totally blame childbirth for this – I was fine pre-child), a total klutz (always falling over or tripping up), I’m most definitely NOT a scary tech dude (I’m not a dude for a start lol) and I have a love for the 1950s. In fact, until my son was born I dressed in vintage every day and set my hair in curlers every night. The arrival of my little bundle meant I was simply too knackered to bother which makes me sad but I’m sure I’ll find my vintage self again one day. Maybe when I’ve had a full nights sleep? Who knows, maybe my social skills will come back then too!
I totally wouldn’t get a date from this would I?!
Tell us about your business
I actually started my business as a Virtual Assistant but slowly evolved into Web Design. If you had asked me five years ago if I could see myself as a web designer, I’d have laughed in your face! Web Design kind of crept up on me until one day it was all I seemed to be doing! Since then I’ve immersed myself in the world of Wordpress and devoured as much information and learning as I possibly can … I’m continually learning!
I can honestly say though that it is the best thing I could have done … I LOVE what I do and actually enjoy going to work now. I have found my calling!
What are the most sparkly bits of what you do?
Being creative! I used to think I wasn’t creative but actually I think I was just suppressing it and not being true to myself.
I love taking a client’s idea and turning it into something spectacular. Particularly those who are after something a little different.
What are the biggest challenges you face running your business?
Time – as in a serious lack of it – and my own self-doubts!
My personal motto when I think I can’t do something is to tell myself to do it anyway. I truly believe that we can achieve anything we set our minds to if we have enough passion for it!
What have been your biggest achievements and how have you celebrated them?
My biggest achievement was getting my first web design client from a recommendation from another client. It gave me so much confidence in myself, knowing that someone was so happy with the website design for them that they recommended me to someone else!
What are your goals – for yourself and your business?
My goals are to get my business to a place where it is generating enough income for me to become a part-time digital nomad. My dream is to work away as much as possible, visiting as many places as we can as a family. Kind of like having four to five holidays a year. I have a few goals in mind to try and get me there!
What is your favourite place in the North East and why?
Oh Lordy, there’s so many! I’m at my happiest when I’m barefoot in a field with our bell tent set up and a drink in hand! There are so many beautiful camping spots in the North East I’d be hard pushed to choose just one!
Who puts a Sparkle in your eye?!
My little boy, Oscar, who is nearly four. He makes me laugh constantly.
A final Sparkly thought – what tips would you give to busy, hard-working entrepreneurs?
Don’t give up on your dream, don’t be afraid to try and don’t let self-doubt stop you. We only get one life, don’t waste it by letting fear hold you back.
